Reparations For Slavery And Anti-Black Racism

The Reparations Subcommittee will focus on assisting campaigns demanding institutional reparations. A number of colleges and universities were founded and supported by the slave economy, and others helped fund racial segregation policies, supported acts of forced removal, and/or exploited a low-wage workforce from campus greens to prison cells. These race-based practices, both during the era of slavery and throughout the twentieth century, have helped stabilize and many times increase the prosperity of colleges and universities.

Coerced Black labor and the demolition of Black communities has underwritten the vitality of higher education and now these institutions are being showcased as one of the country’s primary “growth engines” within today’s economy. The recommendations and guidance from this committee center on using research and organizing to make financial and equity claims, based on the history of race-based wrongdoing and continued injury.
